12 July 2024

It has been a quiet week here at CLR, during this time we have been breaking in some younger horses, this is never a straightforward task and requires plenty of patience, great understanding of their behaviour and skill. Our conditional jockey Elizabeth Gale and our Head Lad Roche have been doing an amazing job.

The beginning of breaking in a young horse starts with our Head Lad introducing the tack correctly and the basic commands. Following on from this he will begin the groundwork training through long-reining to develop the horses balance and co-ordination. This also involves being introduced to several different environments such as gates, the gallops, fields, etc.

After some time, the horse will grow in confidence, this is when our Head Lad will assess if they are ready to move onto the next stage by understanding their behaviour and body language. It is an important one because the next step will involve having a rider on board!

Our two newest additions to the yard have now been under the control of Lizzie and we are looking forward to watching them progress further.

Have a great weekend everyone!
